No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Bullying has the potential to damage the mental health of a victim. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Pupils who are bullying need to change themselves and learn to behave in a socially acceptable manner. Signs and Symptoms A child may indicate by signs or behaviour that he is being bullied. Adults should be aware of these possible signs and that they should investigate if a child: * doesnt want to go on the school bus * begs to be driven to school * is unwilling to go to school (school phobic) begins to be truant * becomes withdrawn, anxious, or lacking in confidence * starts stammering * attempts or threatens suicide or runs away from home/ school * cries himself to sleep at night or has nightmares * feels ill in the morning * begins to do poorly in school work * asks for money or starts stealing money (to pay bully) * has unexplained cuts or bruises * comes home starving (money / lunch has been stolen) * becomes aggress ive, disruptive or unreasonable * is bullying other children or siblings * stops eating * is frightened to say whats wrong gives improbable excuses for any of the above * is afraid to use the internet or mobile phone * is nervous and jumpy when a cyber message is received * lack of eye contact * becomes short tempered * change in attitude towards people at home. Parents of the victim may also be questioned about the incident or about their general concerns. * The bully (bullies) will be asked to genuinely apologize. The pupils will be reconciled. * The bully and the victim may be referred to the School Counselor. * After the incident / incidents have been investigated and dealt with, each case will be monitored to ensure repeated bullying does not take place. * Records of the incident will be maintained by the school authorities. Disciplinary Action Depending on the severity of the case one or more of these actions may be taken: Official warning letter to the parent. * Detention after school. * Exclusion from certain school activities. * In serious cases, suspension or even expulsion will be considered. Prevention SLT, School Counsellors, all teachers and School Prefectural Body are involved in the prevention of bullying through the following: * Creating awareness through student orientation. * Conflict Resolution corners in each class. * Writing stories or poems or drawing pictures about the negative aspects of bullying. Reading stories about bullying or having them read to a class or at assembly. * Role-plays directing students about how to handle a situation of bullying. * Classroom discussions about bullying and why it matters that bullies are dealt with promptly. Suggestions to Parents * Do not attempt to sort the problem out yourself by speaking to the child whom you think may be the bully or by speakin g to their parents. * Do not encourage your child to be ‘a bully’ back. * Talk to your child to build his self confidence and self esteem. * Inform the school authorities.
